Petrol head heaven - Supercars and more

19 – 21 April Taupo, New Zealand.

As the press plainly put it “It’s a new track and a new era for New Zealand in 2024, as the sweeping mountains of the North Island welcome Supercars to Taupō

And what a weekend it was!.

My brother and I were privileged to be invited along to one of the key events on the motorsport calendar down under.

A huge shout out must go to Sonic Motor Racing, in particular their driver Angelo Mouzouris who provided us with fantastic access. Angelo was the 2019 Australian Formula Ford champion, before moving to Supercars super 2 series, and finally joining the Porsche Carrera cup ready to take on Taupo for round 2 of the calendar..

So what did we do over the course of the 2 days?

Well photos it was. Unfortunately, Saturday was a very wet day and visibility on the track was poor at the best of times. You certainly appreciated the talent of these drivers who kept up the pace regardless of the conditions.

This meant Saturday was average for photos, but Sun-day..that was a different story.

Techno mumbo jumbo

Many of the photos captured have come from our range of trusty Canon gear;

2 x Canon 7D Mark II’s   supported by the newer Canon R7

Lenses where mixed depending on our situation but the core goto’s where.

-          Canon L series 28-300mm, 400mm.

-          Sigma DC 17-50mm, & DC 80mm

-          Tamron S 150 – 600m

As the conditions varied, we generally shot with Auto ISO, with manual control over the white balance.

Depth of field sat mainly around the 4.5 – 6.5 mark, with focal lengths averaging 50mm for Pit and Mechanical areas, and 400 – 450mm for the on track action.

We did suffer a bit with some tracking however the R7 really shone in this space. Once you locked onto the subject it tracked extremely well even when passing fences posts, dropping below the circuit line or billboards it was rock solid.

So hopefully you enjoy our selection of photos.
